Merlot

Little Penguin 2005 Merlot Australia

This isn't the best wine in the world, but it could be a lot worse for the price. Good for an evening of debauchery at your local tavern or plying a wood or mountain nymph at home. It's not refined enough for water sprites.

Maison Nicolas 2005 Merlot France

Cheap French wines rarely let you down, and this is no exception. It has a nice neutral balance with enough bite to clear the palette during dinner.

Turning Leaf 2006 Merlot Reserve California

Another from the Gallo stable, this one better than you might expect for the price. But better perhaps with a dinner than drinking by itself.

CK Mondavi 2005 Merlot Wild Creek Canyon California

OK, you could probably find this as a “house” wine at a restaurant. Hopefully, this was one of the canyons that went up in flames recently in California. At best, the 2nd bottle of wine you open. Silenus thinks this should be the 3rd bottle you open. A real cork though

Corq Dorq 2004 Merlot California

I’m not the biggest Merlot fan, but three years in the bottle has seemed to really help this wine. The big, aggressive tannins you usually find in a Merlot largely muted in this wine, a distinct plus for me. Not bad for sipping, and probably would work OK for dinner too.

Canyon Oaks 2005 Merlot California

Not a bad one. In fact, for $4, better than some Merlots I’ve tasted. It would be interesting to see if this wine improves in a year or two...

Yalumba 2002 Merlot South Australia

Yow! A rather non-descript wine from down under. You might want to open this bottle after your serve the good wine first…

Papio 2005 Merlot California

It’s another clandestine wine tasting a local watering hole. OK, so it was a beer joint, but does that mean they can’t try a LITTLE harder in stocking some better house wines? This wine can go as cheap as $6.00 a bottle.

Santa Rita 2002 Merlot Chile

Well, it appears this wine was reviewed a trifle late. According to their website “Memorable Every Time” and so it is in this case. Not a bad one, but it would have helped I think to have got to this a year or so earlier, hence the lower grade.

Nobel 2003 Merlot France

It’s named Noble, which might indicate a regal wine. In this case it’s more likely it indicates old. It’s a pass for me on this one.

Sutter Home 2005 Merlot California

Another decent, if not necessarily spectacular, wine from a local watering hole. It’s worth ordering, if not too expensive.

Dulong 2004 Merlot France

Whoa! It’s another wine that might be better in a Bunsen burner instead of your palette. I’d expect this from New Zealand or Chile but France? Sacre’ Blue! What where they thinking?

Luna di Luna 2003 Merlot Cabernet

Start with good grapes, age them a bit, give it the right price and even with a goofy name – Luna di Luna doesn’t apparently translate into anything understandable in English – you have something worth trying.

Copper Ridge 2004 Merlot California

It’s another clandestine review from a local watering hole. For price ($2 a glass) a pretty drinkable wine. And that’s mostly because it’s aged 3 years in the bottle before they served it, unlike a recently reviewed Cabernet Sauvignon from the same winery.

Frontera 2005 Merlot Chile

It’s another wine from Chile and from Concha y Toro winery. But it’s a lot better that the Chardonnay reviewed earlier. Or maybe I just like reds.
