The Impeachment-9/11 Project
Libertarian-Americans lead effort to restore Constitutional Government to the US
(Read: Part 1 Part 2)Two major areas of political redress have captured the popular imagination:
- Impeachment of the Bush-Cheney copresidency for high crimes and misdemeanors for, among other offenses, its deceptive justification of the war in Iraq and the government's wholesale assault on human liberty
- Criminal investigation of the attacks of 9/11, including establishment of any American government purposes these attacks served, such as pretext for war in Iraq and Afghanistan or to further unConstitutional American empire
Reason to Freedom will address these issues in two columns.
Part 1: Impeachment
The illegality and the immorality of the war are intertwined: both stem from lies to the American people by their government. Specifically, George Bush lied to Congress and to the American people about WMDs and the connection of Iraq to 9/11. The "Eight Essential Lies about Iraq" are contained in Bush' State of the Union, January 28, 2003. These lies and the corresponding truth are shown in the following table:(1)
# |
Bush Statement |
Truth |
1 |
UN concluded in 1999 that Saddam Hussein (SH) had bioweapons materials sufficient to produce 25K liters of anthrax—enough to kill several million people. |
Bush source: 1999 UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) report. Report is based on estimates and guesses, not facts. Report only mentions "precursor materials" that might be used to develop anthrax, and that it was believed Iraq produced these precursor materials. |
2 |
UN concluded SH had materials sufficient to produce 38K liters of botulinum toxin—enough to kill subject millions of people to death by respiratory failure. |
Bush source: 1999 UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) report. Report is based on estimates, or best guesses based on work of UNSCOM inspectors and informants of uncertain reliability. Iraq declared 19K liters; State Dept. states UN believes it could have produced more than double that. |
3 |
Our intelligence sources estimate that SH had the materials to produce as much as 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX nerve agent that can kill thousands. |
Though Bush at least acknowledges these are estimates, he neglects the uncertainty of his sources. CIA and other sources qualified their statements with probably, and strongly suggest. Bush removed the caveats on his statement. |
4 |
US intelligence suggested that SH had > 30K munitions capable of delivering chemical agents. Inspectors turned up 16 of them. |
Probably vague reference to intelligence sources is UNSCOM. Best estimate is 15K artillery shells unaccounted for. UNSCOM supervised the destruction of 40K chemical munitions. No declassified info supports 30K munitions capable of delivering chemical weapons remain unaccounted for. Nor has any news organization found evidence for the validity of Bush' claim. |
5 |
Three defectors give us knowledge that Iraq had several mobile biological weapons labs. |
Defectors have never been identified, even though the administration now can offer them effective asylum. Evidence has not been found of these labs. Bush presented them as fact with a certainty entirely unjustified. |
6 |
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed in the 1990s that SH had an advanced nuclear weapons development program, had a design for a nuclear weapon, and was working on five different methods of enriching uranium for a bomb. |
By 1998, IAEA was convinced SH nuclear program was utterly ineffective. Head of IAEA inspection team, Garry Dillon, stated, "there were no indications of Iraq having achieved its program goals of producing a nuclear weapon; nor were there any indications that there remained in Iraq any physical capability for production of weapon-usable nuclear material of any practical significance. This was confirmed in the 2003 IAEA report. Bush deception was blatant. |
7 |
The British government has learned SH recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. |
The British information was known to be false. Bush did not make the assertion in an October 7, 2002, speech. Colin Powell refused to use the information in his United Nations speech days later, because he knew the assertion had been shown to be false by investigation of former ambassador Joe Wilson (whose wife was a CIA covert agent dealing with weapons of mass destruction). |
8 |
Our intelligence services tell us that SH has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production. |
Also ignores the caveats made by the CIA report; some believed these tubes were for conventional weapons. IAEA by January 20, 2003, concluded these tubes were part of a conventional rocket program. Today, of course, with no nuclear facilities having been found in Iraq, it is clear the information from IAEA was correct. |
Note that in general, the nature of Bush' lies was to present as fact propositions about which his sources simply speculated. Also note, after nearly two years since the invasion of March 2003, weapons of mass destruction have not been found.
Colin Powell followed a week later with a speech to the United Nations, containing some additional whoppers: e.g. satellite photos of "decontamination vehicles" that were water trucks, purported rocket launchers with biological warheads hidden in palm groves that never existed, and video of Iraqi-F1 Mirage jets spraying "simulated anthrax" that predate the first Gulf war.(2)
Article 2, Section 4 of the US Constitution states "The president, vice president, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for and conviction of treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors."
The president's public lies to Congress fall within the boundaries of "high crimes and misdemeanors." And because the copresident, Dick Cheney, was a coconspirator in the deception, Cheney has also committed impeachable offenses. Whether other administration officials are guilty of impeachable offenses depends on how the investigation proceeds.
We have other reasons for impeaching the Bush-Cheney operation, just three here:
- Violating the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions and the U.S. War Crimes Act in Guantanamo Bay
- Spearheading and signing the unConstitutional Patriot Act, followed by mass roundup and detention of foreigners without charges, wholesale acts of violation of the Fourth Amendment's prohibition of unreasonable searches and seizures, and various other abridgments of the Bill of Rights
- Disclosure of CIA agent Valerie Plame in retaliation for her ambassador husband Joe Wilson's negating the evidence for a purported nuclear program by Saddam Hussein's military
The best impeachment site I've seen is The Four Reasons for Responsible Citizenship; it seems to represent the widest range of the political spectrum from nonloopy leftists to compassionate libertarians to those fussy Constitutionalists who simply want their country to obey its fundamental rules.(3)
So should we or shouldn't we? Impeach, that is.
I believe absolutely we have a prima facie case for impeachment of the Bush-Cheney copresidency. Since impeachment is simply the process leading to the trial of the officials before the Senate, it's similar to the concept of an indictment. When a person is indicted for a crime, a judicial body determines enough evidence exists to go to trial.
Therefore, the American people certainly have enough evidence to go to trial against Bush-Cheney. And I say we should go to trial. If we do not uphold the law against its highest miscreants, then as a people we've lost any interest in the freedoms that that law is designed to protect. It's saying, "Imperial potentates, commit any crimes you wish."
I have to believe at least one member of Congress can be found to initiate articles of impeachment against Bush-Cheney, because I do not believe the American people are predominantly sheep and therefore imminently destined for tyranny.
Note |
Though I never believed lying to Congress about extramarital oral sex in the White House qualifies as a high crime and misdemeanor, if the Republican majority can conjure up articles of impeachment against Clinton for such activity surely Congress has a legitimate basis for impeaching Bush-Cheney. |
Please write to your own member of Congress and advocate impeachment now.

Before moving on to part 2 which concerns itself with the 9/11 deception, I want to leave a few words about the proper course of action to have taken in foreign policy in the Middle East and what Americans can prudently do now with respect to Iraq.
The seeds of militant Islamic fundamentalism (MIF) in the Middle East are found within Islam's radical interpretation by psychopaths. This is a process entirely analogous to medieval Catholicism, post-Enlightenment Calvinism, and militancy within Jewish and other faiths. Undeniably, MIF represents a unique danger to civilization in the absence of any external stimulation.
Massive 20th-century American and Western intervention for oil and geopolitical reasons in the Middle East, where the religion is predominantly Islam, externally stimulated MIF, orgasmically! By and large the Western energy-grounded intervention has propped up a kaleidoscope of dictators in the largely desolate region who rule their subjects with premedieval iron fists.
That, coupled with Western, mainly American, support of Zionist Israel, makes MIF widely popular. In the course of the latter half of the 20th century, the United States national security state (NSS) in cooperation with military-energy-finance corporate elites played mutually lucrative footsie with the Saudi royal family… because Saudi Arabia has the largest accessible reservoirs of crude oil in the world.
This NSS-Saudi relationship is a pathological, incestuous one. Legitimate American concerns about MIF terrorism (and legitimate concerns about the liberties of Middle East people)—the Saudis feel they can buy off MIF terrorists by funding schools for the most vicious of them(4)—have been subordinated to the imperialist NSS paradigm.
(Osama bin Laden is and remains a CIA/US corporate-state asset.(5) The NSS paradigm is about oil, and so is Iraq, which has the second largest accessible reservoirs of crude oil in the world.)
So from a long-term view, our problems with MIF are mainly of the imperial American government's own making. (Iraq is a sideshow, an imperial oil grab, ironically having a regime brutally suppressive of MIF.)
The libertarian prescription for us is rapid disentanglement from coercive governments of the Middle East coupled with dissolution of the American imperialist NSS and restoration of full US Constitutional government.
The effect of such a libertarian foreign policy would be immediately to lessen tensions and hostility toward the United States. The price of oil might rise as the rotted Saudi dictatorship or some others fail from lack of Western support; MIFs may even inhabit some of the aftermath governments, but lacking international legitimacy, they won't last.
From the perspective of American and international trade, we can extend favored trade status only to countries whose governments are committed to rapid accomplishment of secular constitutional liberalism, with recognition of religious freedom. We can best remove barriers to rationality in public life in the Middle East by removing these same barriers to rationality in public life in America.
As for the energy issue, oil is a narcotic to a despotic regime (and for those who play footsie with that regime). When and if oil prices rise for any length of time, alternative-energy industries—hemp biomass, failsafe nuclear, and renewables—become liberated.
While energy liberation may be a negative to the power elite who have been running the oil-protection racket for six or seven decades, the can-do American people and their innovative entrepreneurial class will find it a multitrillion-dollar bonanza of the grandest order.
Iraq, now?
Get out. Just, get out.
A penalty for those who are successfully removed from office following impeachment should be the issuance of a formal apology to every American, every Iraqi, and every foreign national who has suffered from our government's illegal, unConstitutional war.
Perhaps a diplomatic effort can be launched to immediately transfer Iraq into a UN protectorate, until supervised elections are held—if the UN can be convinced of the desirability of such an action. Under no circumstances should any American imperial corporate interest, such as members of the notorious Carlyle Group, be allowed to profit from the invasion.
In the aftermath of American departure, let the free market and competitive worldwide bidding determine who develops infrastructure and who receives varying amounts of oil from the refurbished country.
As we set the process in motion to deal with the leadership who lied us into war, we also need to uncover the role of those leaders in the attacks of 9/11. After all, 9/11 was the ultimate catalyst used by this leadership to traumatize the American people into believing war in Iraq was necessary. The people shall investigate this crime and prosecute its perpetrators harshly.
