Wines

Canyon Oaks 2005 Merlot California

Not a bad one. In fact, for $4, better than some Merlots I’ve tasted. It would be interesting to see if this wine improves in a year or two...

El Portillo 2004 Syrah Mendoza Argentina

The worst I’ve tasted tonight. It’s another problematical wine from Argentina. I don’t have a clue what the “Wine Bible” has to say about the region. Hopefully, it’s not “and up and coming wine region.”

Chateau Grand-Jean Recolte 2003 Boudreaux France

A SPEC liquor pick of the week. Some pick. The guy must have been new to wine tasting. I think they were trying to clear out some inventory. Better if you drink it awhile but that doesn’t help the grade much.

Crane Lake 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon California

OK. So this is the 3rd bottle my editor has forced me to taste and report on this day. Not that I mind, because it’s not bad. But at this rate, my accuracy could be called into question, and soon.

Crane Lake 2005 Chardonnay

Cheap? Sure. Good? Better than you might suspect. Although it is the 2nd bottle I’ve tasted this day. For the price it might be hard to do better.

Lorval 2005 Pinot Noir France

It’s a very nice Pinot. Good for lunches, maybe some light dinners or just sipping with a little breathing time beforehand.

Warres Otima 10 Year Old Tawny Porto Portugal

On par with a Taylor Porto I tried earlier. But here you get less. This bottle is a 500ml version, at a cheaper price, but the full 750ml version would cost about the same as some other ports. If you want a nice port a little more cheaply, this could be it.

Aaku 2005 Chardonnay South Australia

In a word, the wine is unremarkable, perhaps to a fault. Look elsewhere.

Tortoise Creek 2005 Pinot Noir France

It’s a nice representative of a Pinot. I ran across this one at a local supermarket. And on sale, too. Good with a nice light dinner or drinking on it’s own.

Kendall Jackson 2005 Chardonnay California

It’s an “old reliable”. I’ve tried this over the years and have always thought they seemed pretty consistent year over year. Don’t know what to bring to a party? Take this. Another good choice might be La Crema. It's about the same price and also good.

Papio 2005 Merlot California

It’s another clandestine wine tasting a local watering hole. OK, so it was a beer joint, but does that mean they can’t try a LITTLE harder in stocking some better house wines? This wine can go as cheap as $6.00 a bottle.

Dynamite 2004 Chardonnay California

I’ve tried a couple of its stable mates and they weren’t half bad. This one is similar. A decent Chardonnay at a nice price but don’t serve this one too chilled….

Tisdale 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon California

Ok, I’ll be the first to tell you this is a REALLY cheap wine. I got it on sale for $3.00. Still, it’s not a really bad choice for the price. And not your typical Cab.

Santa Rita 2002 Merlot Chile

Well, it appears this wine was reviewed a trifle late. According to their website “Memorable Every Time” and so it is in this case. Not a bad one, but it would have helped I think to have got to this a year or so earlier, hence the lower grade.

King Estate 2005 Pinot Noir Oregon

It’s a so-so wine. Not terrible but it needs a little more oomph to take it to the next level (grade).
