Rosemount Estate 2004 Riesling South Eastern Australia
Not my expectation of a Riesling and I dare say probably not yours either. It has some decided problems and honestly, you could do better with just about anything else. Try some Schmitt-Sohne. It got a much better grade even if it cost more money.
It’s a clear, bright medium depth straw-yellow wine, with apparently not a large amount of sugar to it. There is an odd herbaceous or vegetable quality – the canned or cooked variety -- you nose might pick up, with a surprising lack of sweetness considering the fact it’s a Riesling. And there’s a bitterness component there as well. I’m not entirely sure if this is partly due to the age of the bottle. It is after all 4 years old. The balance is OK and finish on the short side. Frankly this wine might be better suited for dinner than anything else and I might well not finish this bottle.
Post Script: I don't do this to many bottles, but I decided pouring it down the drain was a better solution that trying to drink the rest of it! Life is to short to drink band wine.
